On Saturday August 25th, our family was graced by the arrival of Grandpa and Grandma "Wicket" (Skinner). The kids were so excited to see them they even lost interest in Playstation and VMK online. The beloved couple arrived in the area around noon and we arranged to meet them at our favorite
Cheesesteak Shop. After stopping by the house for a bit, and allowing them to unload, we departed for what turned out to be a new and memorable experience for our family. Gold Country Style!!!!!!!

To us,
Columbia is not a country in South America, notorious for their illicit drug trade, it is a quaint town nestled in the foothills rich with California history and a mecca for the one time gold-rush fever that plagued this state. The trip was destined to entertain one and all.
We arrived and tested our hand at panning for gold. After about an hour, we had enough microscopic flakes of gold to trade in for maybe a quarter. Funny thing is, we ended up paying $15 to rent the pans we used to get those flakes. Makes one wonder who is really finding the gold.
Later we headed for dinner. On a tip from a co-worker, we ended up at Alfredo's fine mexican dining in local
Sonora California. While it wasn't Someburro's or Matta's, of Arizona fame, it made due for some famished tourists.

Lastly, we headed back to Columbia to take part in an activity that is offered only a few times a year. The town has maintained their historic schoolhouse, and let us assure you that it is the spitting image of "Little House on the Prairie". You couldn't help but look around to find Laura Engles. The local historical society got into the act by dressing up as teachers during the 1800's, and conducting school as it was in that day. Grandpa got busted, not for texting in the middle of class, or for sneaking in an I-POD, he did it 1800's style by refusing to write his answer on his slate. Shame on you Grandpa!
