Show and Tell

Remember when you were in school and it was show and tell? There was that time when you got to talk about what your dad did, and had some pictures or objects to show and talk about.


Well, here is my show and tell:


My dad has the coolest job in the world. First off, rather than commute bumper to bumper traffic on the freeway systems of Phoenix, he takes a meandering drive through the most gorgeous desert on the planet. Then, he gets bussed down into Arizona's 2nd largest open pit copper mine. They drop him off near his truck and he climbs 2 stories to get into the cab of his truck. This truck is so big, Gravedigger would pee on himself if he saw my dad in a dark alley. Heck, the tires on his rig are 11 feet tall!!!! Not to mention they cost anywhere from $20k - $40k a piece (I don't think you'll find them at Big-O). A drop in the bucket considering the rig itself runs about $2m. Once in his whip, he fires up the 2000 horsepower motor signaling the beginning of the day. Using some of the highest tech GPS systems, and radio communications my dad drives from Shovel to Shovel, and to various drop points taking with him 280 tons of ore as his payload. Each truckload represents about $8000 of revenue for the mine. The mine operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Earlier this year my dad was working on a rainy day, and found himself on a steep slope, ore in truck, and going sideways. Luckily for him, he was able to maneuver the truck onto a flat spot just off the road and level that baby out. A little adrenelin overdose for that day!


After the day, I got to thinking. My poor kids, how are they ever going to be able to get through show and tell.............My Dad does spreadsheets, any questions?
